Flamenco School Feature Documentary Film Press ReleaseFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 7, 2010Flamenco School Documentary to Have Premiere Screenings at Annual Festival Flamenco Internacional de Albuquerque, June 8 - 12, 2010Albuquerque, NM Eva Encinias Sandoval, New Mexico's leading advocate of the fiery art of flamenco, is the focus of Flamenco School, a feature-length documentary film from Albuquerque filmmakers Brent Morris and Reinhard Lorenz. It will premiere June 8th, 10th and 12th at Keller Hall on the campus of the University of New Mexico.Flamenco School offers an in-depth look at the programs of the National Institute of Flamenco, an umbrella organization offering a complete curriculum in flamenco study at the Conservatory of Flamenco Arts, youth companies Alma Flamenca and Ninos Flamencos, the only undergraduate and graduate university programs in the country at UNM, and professional opportunities in Yjastros, the repertory company headed by Eva's son Joaquin Encinias. The film is a first-person, behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to become a true flamenco - the discipline, the rehearsal and the understanding of cante y baile (song and dance). According to director Brent Morris, "After discovering Alma and Ninos performing at the Earth Day Nob Hill celebration in 2009, my partner Reinhard Lorenz and I approached Eva and asked if she would be interested in being the subject of a documentary. She agreed on the spot and a year later, we have completed a heart-warming, personal tale that shows her true spirit and commitment to perpetuating this unique art form into the 21st century. Eva and the National Insitute of Flamenco are cultural treasures. Our film is an attempt to help them reach a broader audience and share this art form with the world. The skill and passion they have instilled in local youth is quite impressive in itself, you combine that with the fact that through five generations, Eva and her family have made Albuquerque the center of flamenco study in the United States. It is quite a remarkable subject and a privilege to be a part of the process."A thread throughout the film also tells the story of how Encinias Sandoval has had to gather broad community support to maintain the annual International Festival of Flamenco through tribulations of the current recession. Flamenco School is produced by Indieproduction, LLC and presented in association with The National Institute of Flamenco. Premiere Screening: June 8, 6:00 p.m. with two additional screenings June 10, 1:30 p.m. and June 12, 4 p.m. All screenings at UNM's Keller Hall. Q&A with the directors and NIF personnel after each screening. Admission: $7 / $5 students. Tickets available at the UNM Box Office.
